Levels
Recreational · Pre-competitive — The only European competition to formally separate state and professional schools (CP) from private schools (CS). The choice is not yours: it depends on your school's status.
Variations
- Repertoire — Two classical variations are compulsory for soloists, in both the CP and CS tracks · 8–25 years old
- Free — Reserved for the modern and contemporary categories — a classical soloist may not enter them · 8–25 years old
Two classical variations are compulsory for soloists. A classical soloist may not perform a modern piece or enter a duo. Video pre-selection is compulsory.
Masterclasses. Part of the festival, at the Staatsballett Berlin, the Friedrichstadt-Palast and the Marameo Studios. Every classical class has live piano.
Jury. No names published, for 2027 or previous editions — the site refers to “renowned dancers, teachers and choreographers”. The partner schools are named instead, which is more useful.
What you can win. Medals and diplomas, and above all a public list of schools offering scholarships: The Royal Ballet School, John Cranko Schule Stuttgart, Ballettschule John Neumeier Hamburg, English National Ballet School, Académie Princesse Grace Monaco, Ballettakademie der Wiener Staatsoper, State Ballet School Berlin, Dutch National Ballet Academy, Royal Swedish Ballet Academy, Dance Academy Zurich, Accademia Nazionale di Danza Roma.
Worth knowing. No other competition opens the door to those schools by name. Real caveats: opaque pricing and a compulsory hotel package.
